School Nurse

Position Summary

The School Nurse is responsible for providing professional nursing care, first aid and health support to students, staff and visitors. The role includes managing the school clinic, responding to illnesses and emergencies, administering authorised medication, maintaining confidential health records and promoting a safe and healthy school environment.

The School Nurse also provides medical and first-aid support for school sports fixtures, tournaments, sports days, ECA activities, educational visits and other school events. The postholder will work closely with parents, teachers, the PE and ECA teams, school leaders, safeguarding staff, external healthcare providers and emergency services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Student Health Care
  • Assess and provide appropriate care to students who become unwell or injured during the school day.
  • Administer first aid and nursing care within the nurse's professional scope of practice.
  • Monitor students in the clinic and determine whether they may return to class, require collection by a parent or need further medical attention.
  • Contact parents or guardians promptly when a student is unwell, injured or requires follow-up care.
  • Support students with chronic health conditions, allergies, disabilities or other medical needs.
  • Develop and maintain individual healthcare plans in consultation with parents and relevant healthcare professionals.
  • Provide appropriate emotional support and reassurance to students receiving care.
  • Refer serious or ongoing health concerns to the appropriate healthcare provider.
  • Emergency Response
  • Respond promptly to medical emergencies occurring anywhere on the school campus.
  • Assess emergency situations and provide immediate first aid or life-saving support.
  • Contact emergency medical services when necessary.
  • Ensure parents, school leaders and relevant staff are informed promptly of serious incidents.
  • Maintain accurate records of accidents, injuries, emergency treatment and referrals.
  • Support the school's emergency and crisis-response procedures.
  • Participate in emergency drills and provide guidance regarding medical-response arrangements.
  • Accompany a student to hospital when required and authorised by the school.
  • Medication Management
  • Administer medication in accordance with school policy, written parental authorisation and appropriate medical instructions.
  • Maintain accurate medication-administration records.
  • Ensure medication is clearly labelled, securely stored and accessible only to authorised staff.
  • Monitor medication expiry dates and advise parents when replacement medication is required.
  • Maintain and regularly check emergency medication for students with allergies, asthma or other identified conditions.
  • Ensure controlled and prescription medication is managed safely and confidentially.
  • Avoid providing medication outside the nurse's professional authority or the school's approved procedures.
  • Health Records and Confidentiality
  • Maintain accurate, current and confidential student and staff health records.
  • Review student medical information, allergies, health conditions and emergency contacts.
  • Update the school's medical database when new information is received.
  • Maintain records of clinic visits, treatment, medication, accidents and communication with parents.
  • Prepare appropriate health and incident reports for school leadership.
  • Share medical information only with authorised personnel when necessary to protect an individual's health and safety.
  • Comply with the school's data-protection, confidentiality and record-retention requirements.
  • Sports Fixtures and School Sports Activities
  • Provide nursing and first-aid support for home and away sports fixtures, tournaments, sports days, PE activities, ECA sports and other school sporting events.
  • Work closely with the PE and ECA teams to review the medical requirements for each activity.
  • Review participating students' medical conditions, allergies, emergency medication and other relevant health information before each event.
  • Prepare and check first-aid kits, emergency medication, ice packs, water and other medical supplies required for sports activities.
  • Ensure appropriate medical and emergency-response arrangements are in place before an activity begins.
  • Remain available at the designated medical point during home fixtures, competitions and sports events.
  • Respond promptly to injuries, illness, dehydration, heat-related conditions and other medical emergencies.
  • Assess whether an injured student may safely return to the activity, requires further monitoring or should be referred for additional medical treatment.
  • Liaise with parents, coaches, teachers, school leaders and emergency services when required.
  • Accompany students to away fixtures, tournaments or hospitals when assigned by the school.
  • Support the PE and ECA teams with risk assessments and emergency planning for sports activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of treatment, injuries and medical incidents occurring during sports activities.
  • Complete and submit accident or incident reports and provide appropriate follow-up information.
  • Monitor the readiness of first-aid facilities and emergency equipment located near sports areas.
  • Support sports fixtures and activities held outside normal school hours, including evenings and weekends, when scheduled in advance.
  • School Trips, Camps and Events
  • Review medical information and potential health risks before school trips, camps and special events.
  • Prepare medication, first-aid kits and emergency medical information for off-site activities.
  • Brief trip leaders and supervising staff regarding students' medical requirements.
  • Provide nursing or first-aid support at school events and activities when assigned.
  • Accompany students on educational visits or residential trips when required.
  • Coordinate with event organisers to ensure suitable medical and emergency arrangements are in place.
  • Provide reasonable support for activities outside normal school hours when agreed in advance.
  • Communicable Disease and Infection Control
  • Monitor symptoms of communicable illnesses within the school community.
  • Follow school and public-health procedures concerning infectious diseases and exclusion from school.
  • Advise school leaders regarding illness trends or potential outbreaks.
  • Communicate relevant health guidance to staff and parents when authorised.
  • Promote effective handwashing, hygiene and infection-control practices.
  • Ensure the clinic, beds, medical equipment and frequently used surfaces are cleaned appropriately.
  • Manage the safe handling and disposal of clinical waste and contaminated materials.
  • Liaise with relevant health authorities when required and authorised by school leadership.
  • Clinic and Medical Supply Management
  • Ensure the school clinic is clean, organised, secure and ready for use.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of medication, first-aid materials and medical equipment.
  • Monitor stock levels and expiry dates and request replacements in a timely manner.
  • Ensure first-aid kits are available and appropriately stocked across the campus.
  • Check emergency medical equipment regularly and report any faults immediately.
  • Maintain appropriate arrangements for the storage and disposal of medical supplies.
  • Support budget planning and purchasing for clinic and first-aid requirements.
  • First-Aid Training and Staff Support
  • Support the planning and coordination of first-aid training for designated staff.
  • Maintain current records of staff first-aid qualifications and renewal dates.
  • Provide practical guidance to staff regarding common medical conditions and emergency procedures.
  • Brief relevant staff on individual student health needs while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
  • Support the development and review of school health, medication and emergency-response procedures.
  • Promote awareness of allergies, asthma, epilepsy, diabetes and other relevant medical conditions.
  • Health Promotion and Education
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and positive wellbeing across the school community.
  • Support age-appropriate health education relating to hygiene, nutrition, hydration, first aid, illness prevention and personal wellbeing.
  • Contribute to health-awareness campaigns, assemblies and school communications.
  • Provide general health guidance to students, staff and parents within the nurse's professional scope.
  • Work collaboratively with pastoral, safeguarding, PE, ECA and catering teams on relevant health initiatives.
  • Support the monitoring of environmental health matters, including air quality, heat and hydration, when requested.
  • Safeguarding and Student Welfare
  • Remain alert to signs of abuse, neglect, self-harm or other safeguarding concerns.
  • Report safeguarding concerns immediately through the school's established procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students.
  • Support students sensitively while avoiding promises of confidentiality that conflict with safeguarding responsibilities.
  • Work collaboratively with the Designated Safeguarding Lead and relevant pastoral staff.
  • Ensure all medical examinations and treatments respect students' privacy, dignity and cultural needs.
  • Communication and Professional Collaboration
  • Communicate professionally and sensitively with students, parents, staff and healthcare providers.
  • Provide relevant updates to school leaders while respecting medical confidentiality.
  • Liaise with hospitals, clinics, doctors, emergency services and public-health authorities when required.
  • Attend relevant staff, safeguarding, health and safety, sports and operational meetings.
  • Contribute to reviews following serious accidents or medical incidents.
  • Work collaboratively with other school nurses and designated first-aid staff to ensure appropriate clinic coverage.
  • Carry out other reasonable duties assigned by the Director of Business and Services or Senior Leadership Team.


Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Bachelor's degree or recognised professional qualification in Nursing.
  • Current and valid nursing licence or professional registration recognised in Thailand.
  • Current certification in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
  • Relevant nursing experience in a hospital, clinic, school or community-health setting.
  • Knowledge of emergency care, infection control and medication management.
  • Ability to assess illness and injury and make safe,
