Working Hours: Monday to Friday 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM

Purpose of the PostThe Assistant to the Head of Chinese is primarily a teaching position designed to support the effective delivery of the Chinese programme across DLTS International School.

The primary purpose of the role is to undertake MYP Chinese teaching responsibilities, enabling the Head of Chinese to provide effective departmental leadership and oversight across Early Years (EY) through to the Middle Years Programme (MYP) at both campuses.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, the post holder will provide administrative, organisational, and clerical support to the Head of Chinese to facilitate the efficient operation of the department.

This position does not carry delegated departmental leadership authority. The Head of Chinese remains the main point of accountability and decision-making authority for the Chinese Department.

Teaching ResponsibilitiesThe post holder will:

  • Teach approximately 15 hours per week, within an expected range of 12–18 hours, as allocated by the Head of Chinese in consultation with the relevant Section Heads and the Deputy Head of School (Academics).
  • Primarily teach MYP Chinese, including classes that may otherwise be allocated to the Head of Chinese.
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality lessons in accordance with the school's curriculum and programme requirements.
  • Assess student learning, maintain appropriate assessment records, and provide timely and constructive feedback.
  • Complete student reports and other required academic documentation accurately and within established deadlines.
  • Contribute to curriculum planning, resource development, and the continuous improvement of Chinese language provision.
  • Support the implementation of agreed departmental and school-wide teaching and learning practices.
  • Undertake homeroom responsibilities where allocated.

Administrative Support to the Head of ChineseThe post holder will support the Head of Chinese by:

  • Maintaining accurate departmental records, including timetables, teaching allocations, schedules, meeting records, and documentation required for programme authorisation and accreditation.
  • Preparing and circulating departmental meeting agendas, minutes, action points, and follow-up documentation.
  • Collating departmental information and data as requested, including information relating to workload, assessment, student progress, and programme requirements.
  • Monitoring and organising routine departmental documentation to ensure information is accurate, current, and readily accessible.
  • Coordinating administrative and logistical arrangements for departmental events, including Chinese New Year celebrations and other Chinese cultural activities, under the direction of the Head of Chinese.
  • Assisting with translation and liaison between the Chinese Department, school administration, and other sections of the school where required.
  • Supporting the Head of Chinese with correspondence, documentation, and routine departmental communication.
  • Assisting with the preparation of materials and evidence required for internal reviews, programme authorisation, accreditation, or other school quality-assurance processes.

Cover and School Duties

  • The post holder may provide within-department teaching cover of up to a maximum of two hours per week, as arranged by the Head of Chinese.
  • School duties will be allocated on the same basis as those assigned to other teaching staff.
  • Relevant Section Heads should inform the Head of Chinese of any additional duties, cover, meetings, or responsibilities assigned to the post holder to ensure that the overall workload remains visible and appropriately managed.
  • Where the total workload exceeds the contracted allocation, the Head of Chinese and the Deputy Head of School (Academics) will review the allocation and agree on an appropriate adjustment.

Scope and Authority of the PostThe Assistant to the Head of Chinese is a supporting teaching and administrative position and does not hold delegated departmental management authority.

Accordingly:

  • The post holder does not line manage Chinese teaching staff.
  • The post holder does not independently allocate work, teaching responsibilities, duties, or cover to other members of the Chinese Department.
  • The post holder does not represent the Chinese Department in leadership or management forums unless specifically requested to do so by the Head of Chinese.
  • Requests relating to Chinese staff time, cover, timetable changes, duties, or participation in school activities should be directed to the Head of Chinese, rather than to the post holder.
  • In the absence of the Head of Chinese, any necessary departmental leadership or cover arrangements will be determined by the Deputy Head of School (Academics).

Qualifications and ExperienceEssentialThe successful candidate must have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Chinese Language, Chinese Literature, Teaching Chinese as a Second or Foreign Language (TCSOL/TCFL), Education, or another closely related field.
  • A recognised teaching qualification and/or valid teaching licence.
  • Putonghua Proficiency Test (PSC) Level 2A or above, or equivalent evidence of proficiency in standard spoken Mandarin.
  • A minimum of two years' teaching experience working with non-native learners of Chinese.
  • Experience teaching students across primary and lower-secondary level.
  • Sufficient working proficiency in English to collaborate effectively with Section Heads, teaching colleagues, and school administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach using Simplified Chinese characters.

DesirableThe following qualifications and experience would be advantageous:

  • Master's degree in TCSOL/TCFL, Chinese Linguistics, Education, or a related discipline.
  • Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (CTCSOL) or equivalent professional certification.
  • Experience teaching within the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) or another inquiry-based international curriculum.
  • Experience preparing students for YCT and/or HSK examinations.
  • Experience supporting school or programme authorisation, accreditation, or quality-assurance processes.
  • Experience working across more than one campus, school section, or academic programme.
  • Working knowledge of the Thai language.

Terms and ConditionsThe standard working hours for this position are 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, in accordance with the school's normal working arrangements.

Total contracted hours, working arrangements, benefits, and other terms and conditions will be in accordance with the standard DLTS International School teaching contract and applicable school policies.
