The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is the most inclusive intergovernmental platform in the Asia-Pacific region. The ESCAP secretariat supports inclusive, resilient and sustainable development in the region by generating action-oriented knowledge, and by providing technical assistance and capacity-building services in support of national development objectives, regional agreements and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. ESCAP also provides support to partners at the national level.
To deliver on its mandate, easily adapt to change, and increase the impact of its work, ESCAP seeks to continuously innovate its knowledge products, culture, and internal processes. ESCAP's corporate innovation efforts are led by an inter-divisional team that promotes internal innovation activities to shape the organization's culture, help reshape ESCAP's products and services, promote greater cross-collaboration among Divisions, and expose personnel to digital tools, Human Centered Design (HCD) and Design Thinking methodologies.
This internship is located in the Division of Administration and operates at the organization-wide level
under the supervision of the Office of the Executive Secretary. The intern reports directly to the Innovation Team members.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Flexible arrangements are possible.

Responsibilities

In close collaboration and under the supervision of the Innovation Team, the intern is expected to undertake the following activities in relation to the Innovation Team deliverables for 2022:
Support in designing and implementing innovation activities that foster a culture of innovation and supports the organization to deliver new and better products and services to stakeholders.
Support the organization of Innovation events, including the ESCAP Innovation Awards and Youth side event for the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development.
Assist in the preparation and implementation of the communication and outreach strategy of the Innovation Team and SharePoint site.
Assist in the creation and dissemination of communication materials and campaigns.
Provide research assistance, collect, and analyze information/ data in areas related to corporate innovation.
Assist in the identification, promotion/ testing of existing and new innovative tools and solutions across ESCAP.
Provide other assistance as needed.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), preferably in the areas of Innovation Management, Business Management, Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Communications, Creative Design, or related areas; OR
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Proficiency in graphic design tools is considered an advantage.
  • Proficiency in Office 365 and SharePoint development is considered an advantage.
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

United Nations Considerations
