INTERN - LIBRARY/INFORMATION MANAGEMENT [Temporary]

This internship position is with the United Nations ESCAP Library, in the Communications and Knowledge Management Section. The internship is for a minimum period of two months with an opportunity for extension up to six months, if required by the Library.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the division or office to which they are assigned. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, a remote/virtual internship can be arranged between the Library and an individual intern.

Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • cataloguing books, serials and multimedia materials in the Library's integrated library system (ILS) and institutional repository;
  • improving the metadata and records in the digital repository to increase exposure to ESCAP research;
  • assisting in the Library's digitization efforts;
  • assisting in collection management activities (shelving, weeding, etc.);
  • assisting in reference and circulation services;
  • designing and publishing publicity materials on the Library's e-resources, services and ESCAP publications, including online brochures, streaming video presentations, and curated email updates;
  • taking part in the Library's information and knowledge management tasks and initiatives; and
  • performing other related work, as required.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
Have studied library science or information technology/management is desirable.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.¿ Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship programme.¿Knowledge of an additional UN ESCAP Working Language (Chinese, French, and Russian) is an asset.

United Nations Considerations
