INTERN - COMMUNICATIONS/DIGITAL OUTREACH [Temporary]

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP's role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy-oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the region.
This position is located in the Communications and Knowledge Management Section (CKMS), in the Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary for Programme Support (ODESPS). The intern works under the supervision of the Chief of CKMS and the External Relations Officer. The internship is UNPAID and full-time for the duration of 3-6 months. Interns work five days per week (35 hours).
Interns will gain first-hand experience with regard to the activities of ESCAP in strategic communications, public information, digital outreach, website and knowledge management. They will also gain a greater understanding of how ESCAP works and its range of activities in the Asia-Pacific region.

Responsibilities
The internship is centred on assisting the Communications and Knowledge Management Section (CKMS) in discharging a range of tasks related to strategic communications, public information, digital outreach, website and knowledge management to raise the organization's visibility. The following responsibilities can be adapted, as appropriate, to fit each intern:
  • Drafting and editing content for public information materials, including press releases, newsletter articles, blogs and social media;
  • Producing social media plans and campaigns, as well as exploring more potential digital outreach initiatives to raise online visibility of ESCAP work;
  • Producing multimedia material for online and offline products, including infographics, motion graphics, short videos, publication covers, presentation templates and event flyers;
  • Assisting with video production, including shooting and editing videos, mixing sound and animating slideshows, if required;
  • Assisting with photography and video coverage, when required, and supporting management of the ESCAP multimedia database;
  • Assisting in the organization and execution of events to mark UN observances, press conferences, media launches, campaigns or exhibitions;
  • Monitoring news clippings from local newspapers on global, regional and national issues;
  • Providing background research for public information materials;
  • Assisting with the ESCAP Briefing Programme;
  • Initiating and carrying out assigned tasks/special projects.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter and backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Knowledge of Adobe Creative Studio and Canva is desirable.

Job - Specific Qualification

A technical or vocational certificate in graphic design is desirable.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional ESCAP working language (Chinese, French, and Russian) is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
