INTERN - ARCHITECT/ENGINEER [Temporary]

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote regional cooperation for inclusive economic and social development in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP's role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership, through its analytical, normative and technical cooperation, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.
This intern position (Architect) is located at the Seismic Mitigation Project (SMP) Project Management Office within Division of Administration (DA) the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Bangkok, Thailand. The intern works under the direct supervision of the Project Manager of the SMP for a period of two to six months depending on the needs of the division.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM, Monday-Friday) under the supervision of the Chief of SMP/DA and/ or a staff member in the Section to which they are assigned. Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Space reconfiguration:
  • Assist the SMP team to coordinates, analyses and advises on the planning, design and construction of all internal office space reconfiguration, related office moves as well as all space planning for the proposed and current office space at the UN ESCAP complex;
  • Assist the SMP team to update the interior layouts;
  • Assist the implement on drawings of the space reconfiguration; and
  • Assist SMP team with furniture selection for new office space configuration.
Construction documents:
  • Assist SMP team to coordinate the review process of construction drawings or related documents.
Communication, Outreach, and Change management:
  • Supports the SMP team in their communication with clients and stakeholders, including providing guidance on information and training materials, making presentations to all staff and coordinating workshops;
  • Assists the SMP team to develop communication products such as website, posters, promotional videos, motion graphics, newsletters, and social media platforms; and
  • Helps preparing staff for the upcoming change in their ways of working, sensitizes staff on the Activity-Based workspace and provides necessary trainings;
Performs other duties as required.

Training/experience in design software such as Adobe creative suite, AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM would be desirable.

Education

To qualify for an internship by the United Nations Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (1) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (2) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).
Preferably in the area of Architectural, Interior Design, Engineering, or Facilities management degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of an Architectural, Engineering, Facilities Management degree.
Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications, including MS Suite (Word, Power Point, Excel), and AutoCAD.
Applicants must have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations.
Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage. Thai language not essential although would be considered advantageous.
