The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP's role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.
The Trade, Investment and Innovation Division (TIID) assists developing countries in the region through providing advisory services, organizing capacity building tools and activities, carrying out research and analysis and supporting intergovernmental cooperation on trade, investment and innovation in support of sustainable development.
This position is located in the Investment and Enterprise Development Section, Trade, Investment and Innovation Division. The incumbent reports to the Chief, Investment and Enterprise Development Section and/or officer(s) designated by the Chief.

Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Chief, Investment and Enterprise Development Section, and overall supervision of the Director, Trade, Investment and Innovation Division, the incumbent is required to perform the following functions:
  • Researches, extracts and compiles basic information and technical data on specific programmes/projects and related topics and issues.
  • Sorts, consolidates, extracts and processes data and enter into relevant database.
  • Assists in monitoring developments/issues on subjects or areas assigned by collecting, selecting, analysing and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases, the library and the Internet; assists with the proofreading of written materials (reports, studies and working papers) to ensure they are ready for publication.
  • Assembles original statistical material; adjusts reported data from different sources and load data into computerized database system.
  • Assists in the evaluation and examination of data sets for accuracy, clarity and validity.
  • Assists in the maintenance of relevant computerized databases.
  • Prepares a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, charts and/or diagrams for information and review by senior officers.
  • Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documents, articles, books and publications; designs and layouts the publication and other materials in accordance with UN publication guideline by using appropriate publishing software.
  • Reviews, stores, classifies, and maintains relevant computerized databases.
  • Takes notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings; assists in the organization of conferences, workshops, and seminars of the Section by creating travel requests, processing DSA advance and authorizations, facilitating visa application, communicating with participants, etc.
  • Collects organizes and disseminates relevant UN and media information.
  • Co-ordinates and sets up press briefings, press statements, pamphlets or other public awareness campaigns to educate public on any specific issue.
  • Provides guidance/training to new/junior staff.
  • Performs other related work as required, including, under minimal supervision, the full range of office management and administrative support functions, and provides direct assistance to assigned senior officers of the section, prepares and processes contracts for individual contractors and consultants, requisitioning, letters of agreements, etc.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

A relevant first-level university degree in management, business, economics or related field is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of social and economic development or related area is required.
Experience in research assistance within the United Nations Common System or international organizations is desirable.
Experience in using Microsoft Excel for data analysis or statistical program is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Special Notice

Appointment against this post is on a local basis; candidates shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of the ESCAP office, irrespective of nationality and length of time the candidate may have been in the country. If no suitable local candidate is identified, candidates located elsewhere may be considered. The candidate is responsible for any expenses incurred in taking the relevant examinations at the duty station, and of any costs related to traveling and relocating to the duty station in the event of an employment offer.
Must have passed the United Nations Global General Service Test (GGST) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away from Headquarters.

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
