The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote inclusive economic, social and environmental development and support regional cooperation and integration in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP's role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat, is to support its membership, through its analytical, normative and technical cooperation, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.
The internship programme is for a duration of at least three months with the possibility for extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the division. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours).
This internship is located in the Programme Planning and Budget Section (PBS) of the Strategy and Programme Management Division (SPMD). The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Assistant, and under the overall supervision of the Programme Planning Officer.

Responsibilities
This internship opportunity offers:
Insight into the programme of work of the United Nations, in particular ESCAP, and exposure to a multicultural work environment.
Among the programmatic and budgetary management of ESCAP, the Programme Planning and Budget Section contributes to the development and maintenance of monitoring tools and dashboards for tracking progress on implementation and the results of the ESCAP programme of work. Currently, the tool and the dashboard run on MS-technology (SharePoint, PowerApp, and PowerBI). This internship is to contribute to the upgrade of the monitoring tool using alternative technology.
Daily responsibilities will vary and depend on the individual's background. They include but are not limited to:
  • Review and provide input on the design of the monitoring tool and the dashboard;
  • Assist in creating website layouts/user interfaces by using standard HTML/CSS practices including font styles and size, frames, layers, and navigations;
  • Prepare mockup layouts/designs based on an agreed concept;
  • Propose icons, backgrounds, colour schemes and develop graphics that mold on the layouts
  • Perform other duties related to the work of the Programme Planning and Budgeting Section, as required.

Technological awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology. Understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office. Actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks. Shows willingness to learn new technology.

Education

The applicant to the programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
Have a demonstrated ability in web design and graphic design tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Piktochart and Canva is desirable.
Knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Qlick is considered an advantage.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
