The Environment and Development Division, Environment and Development Policy Section internship is for at least two months with an opportunity for extension with an additional four months, for a total duration not to exceed six months, if required by the division.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Due to the ongoing health and travel restrictions, this internship is offered in a home-based modality.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the division or office to which they are assigned.
Given the nature of this home-based internship, work hours and workload can be arranged with the supervisor to accommodate time zone differences.
The Environment and Development Policy Section plays a leading role in facilitating the analysis, development, promotion and dissemination of innovative policies in the field of environment and development. With a focus on 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, and the need to improve the capacity of policymakers in the region to development implementation strategies in an integrated manner.

Responsibilities

To support and strengthen selected activities related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development:
I. Support the promotion of access rights in the region (access to information, public participation, and access to justice in environmental matters):
a) Conducting outreach in the context of stakeholder engagement, in particular though activities in the implementation of projects and initiatives, including youth engagement campaigns
b) Support the development of inputs to reports, summaries, and transcripts
c) Support in the development of materials and content for social media
d) Assistance in the organization of workshops, conferences, and expert group meetings
e) Support ESCAP in joint activities with partner agencies, and regional bodies such as ASEAN, AICHR, etc.
II. Support to program activities related to the protection, conservation, and sustainable use of the ocean:
a) Support in the organization of the 5th Asia-Pacific Day for the Ocean (29 November 2022)
b) Undertake research on the sustainability of the ocean and climate change, and related practices in Asia and the Pacific, including through innovative methods of information collection and outreach, and support in the production of knowledge products for sharing with member states and other stakeholders
c) Note-taking support, and production of PowerPoints, and summaries during key events
d) Support in preparation for the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon (27 June -1 July 2022)
e) Support ESCAP activities in servicing member States and intergovernmental platforms, such as the G20
III. Other duties, as required, including but not limited to:
a) Assistance in the organization of intergovernmental meetings and conferences, i.e. the 7th Committee on Environment and Development
b) Participating in coordination meetings and supporting organizers
c) Ad hoc tasks as requested

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants to the programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
